Conduit

A virtual machine that runs the Compass Operating System and is leveraged as a centralized connection to the Compass Analytics Engine.

Customer Managed Storage (CMS)

Storage that is provisioned to the Compass Accelerators with monitoring and management of the storage resources in the hands of the customer.  Capacity management and performance monitoring is provided by Compass to ensure smooth operations.

Customer Relationship Management (CRM)

Software that tracks interactions between a business and existing or potential customers.

CyberArk

Software security tool for password management of privileged accounts.

A suite of built-in Compass backup security features that ensure safe data recovery.

D

Data Mover

A software component of data protection, typically for VMware, that moves data to and from a server.

Data Protection Server (DPS)

The software DPAT (Data Protection Acquisition Tool) that runs on the Accelerator.

Data Recovery

Restoration of lost or corrupt data.

Deal Desk

Sales process that offers and finalizes new customer solutions.

Deduplicated Occupancy (MB)

This value indicates the amount of space being consumed on disk on the Cobalt Iron Accelerator. This value is after deduplication and compression have been applied.

Deduplication

Elimination of duplicate or redundant information.

DPAT (Data Protection Acquisition Tool)

An Adaptive Data Protection Data Acquisition Tool (ADP DAT) that manages, monitors, and controls a variety of Data Protection, Cloud, Storage, and Network products and services.

E

Encryption Key

A string of numbers and/or letters stored in a file that decode or encode cryptographic data when processed through a cryptographic algorithm.

Enrollment

The process of provisioning systems and protection clients in Compass.

Event Management

Monitoring events and alerting customers to actionable events via incident tickets.

G

General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)

European data privacy laws regulating user data that a business can collect and store.

L

Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP)

Automated authentication service integrated into Compass through the Accelerator Conduit that eliminates the need for separate user authentication.

Long Term Retention (LTR)

Long-term retentions are generally reserved for satisfying historical or regulatory requirements for retaining specific data sets in an environment.  It is unlikely this data would be used as part of business operational recoveries, but it may be needed for evidentiary or regulatory compliance reasons or in the event of a disaster.

M

Managed Services Provider (MSP)

IT service provider

Migration

The process of selecting, preparing, extracting, and transforming data and permanently transferring it from one computer storage system to another.

N

Network Attached Storage (NAS)

Dedicated centralized file storage for multiple users.

O

Onboarding

The Cobalt Iron service of actively educating and guiding a new customer through the setup and feature use of Compass.

Organization

An organization is a flexible construct that lets you configure your backup strategy to work best for you. Organizations are built in a hierarchy of parent and child organizations and consist of any set of Cobalt Iron-protected resources or systems. Some enterprises implement hundreds of organizations—for various locations, customers, partner sites, data centers, and departments. As an administrator, you may be responsible for a set of sub-organizations. If you’re the administrator at a smaller business, you may own all the organizations and systems.

P

Protected Occupancy (MB)

This value indicates the amount of disk space that would be required to restore every copy and every version of every file protected by Cobalt Iron Compass for this client. This value does not take into account deduplication or compression.

Protection Class

A protection class defines standard protection qualities that are applied to systems based on their requirements. Organization-wide protection classes define the organization-wide retention and protection policies.

Protection Client

A customized backup service configured for a particular system and based on distinct data protection and retention policies. Each time a data protection action is completed, Commander records it as an event.

Protection Servers

All your backup and protection-services data are stored on protection servers that reside on accelerators, managed and directed by Commander.

Purpose Built Backup Appliance (PBBA)

Standalone disk-based storage device.

Physical Tape Library (PTL)

A high-capacity storage system used for storing, retrieving, reading from, and writing to tape cartridges.

Protected Systems

Systems and applications that are protected by Compass.

R

Recovery Point Objective (RPO)

Metric to calculate how quickly a business must recover IT infrastructure and services after an unexpected event to maintain business continuity.

Retention Policy

A Compass retention policy is a set of rules that govern how many revisions of a protected object to keep for a customer-defined period of time. Retention policies exist as components of protection policies in Commander.

S

Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML)

Authentication standard that enables access to multiple web apps using one set of login credentials.

Short Term Retention (STR)

Short Term Retention (STR) most often refers to retention parameters that support operational recovery requirements.  These are often 30 days or less but may be longer.
